Monosolenium tenerum, commonly known as Pellia, is a species of liverwort that is commonly used in the aquarium hobby as an aquatic plant. It is native to Asia, but has been introduced to other parts of the world.
Pellia has a unique appearance with its thin, branching fronds that form dense mats. It is a slow-growing plant that can tolerate a wide range of water conditions, from soft to hard water, and from acidic to alkaline pH. It prefers moderate to low lighting and does not require CO2 supplementation, although it will benefit from it.
In addition to its use in aquariums, Pellia also has medicinal properties and has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine to treat various ailments such as fever, jaundice, and hepatitis. It contains compounds such as polysaccharides, flavonoids, and terpenoids that are believed to have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and anti-viral properties. However, more research is needed to fully understand its medicinal potential.
Monosolenium tenerum grows in India, East Asia, and Hawaii. Tropical Asian liverwort, Monosolenium tenerum. It forms forked cushions. This liverwort is occasionally confused with Lomariopsis lienata, a fern prothallium.
Monosolenium tenerum could be described as a bigger, darker Riccia fluitans. It does not float, so it forms cushions on the ground.
Simply splitting the cushions can propagate this liverwort. When grown loosely, its submersible form can become a pest. So, tie it to rocks with nylon or tuck it between driftwood or stones. After a short time secured to a wood or rock, it grows into a lovely tuft that’s easy to split out into more portions.
