Cryptocoryne retrospiralis, also known as the Cryptocoryne spiralis ‘Red’, is a species of aquatic plant that is popular among aquarium hobbyists. It is native to Southeast Asia, where it can be found growing in streams, rivers, and other bodies of water.
Cryptocoryne retrospiralis has long, narrow leaves that can grow up to 20 inches (50 cm) in length. The leaves are typically green in color, but may have brown or red tinges depending on the lighting conditions in the aquarium. This plant can be grown submerged or partially submerged, and will produce small white flowers when grown emersed.
In the aquarium, Cryptocoryne retrospiralis can be planted in the substrate or attached to rocks or driftwood. It prefers moderate to high lighting and a neutral to slightly acidic pH range of 6.0-7.5. It is a relatively slow-growing plant that requires little maintenance, but will benefit from occasional fertilization and CO2 supplementation.
Cryptocoryne retrospiralis is known for its ability to form dense stands in the aquarium, creating a natural-looking backdrop for fish and other aquatic creatures. It is also a popular choice for aquascaping, and can be used to create striking vertical elements in the design.
